How to flash Remix OS 2.0 onto Nexus 9 and 10?

On July 31st, 2015, we released Remix OS 1.5 for Nexus 9 and 10 and got thousands of views. We are excited to announce that we have released Remix OS 2.0 ROMs for Nexus 9 and 10.

Introduction of Remix OS 2.0:

Remix OS 2.0 brings a PC experience unlike anything on Android and an Android experience unlike anything on a PC.

Engineered to bring you the best of both worlds – the harmonious fusion of a mobile and desktop experience,  Desktop gives you access to important folders and shortcuts of most frequently used applications so you can focus on what you create rather than where to look for it.

Notifications and Taskbar have been given a complete makeover as well. With additional horizontal real estate, Notifications appears from the right side of your desktop. Complete with a Start Menu and System Tray, Taskbar allows you to find and start all your apps from one location on one side while managing everyday system settings and connectivity on the other.

  2. Download image and place it in C:\ADB.
  3. Open cmd window and type CD /ADB.
  4. Connect the Nexus 9 and 10 to the computer via USB.
  5. Open a terminal on your PC and reboot the device into fastboot mode by typing adb reboot bootloader.
  6. Flash images onto your device by entering the following five commands:
  • fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
  • fastboot flash boot boot.img
  • fastboot flash system system.img
  • fastboot flash cache cache.img
  • fastboot flash userdata userdata.img
  1.  Clean the existing data by entering the following command:

Awesome!! I've been waiting so long for this :)

Can I flash this directly over version 1.5 without having to wipe all my data??

    Hi,

In the Nexus 9 ROM zip. I don't have userdata.img but vendor.img. Should I run fastboot flash userdata (or vendor) vendor.img instead?

Same as Thomas where is the userdata.img? my nexus is now stuck in a boot loop.

I have run instead fastboot flash vendor vendor.img and it seems to work.

EDIT: I am able to see the RemixOS logo but I have a boot loop then..

    Any Solution?

I am experiencing the same problem as Thomas as well. My Nexus 9 keep rebooting with Google and RemixOS logos for the past 20 minutes now.

Thomas, if you are coming from 6.0 to Remix OS you will need to flash the 5.11 vendor image from the official Nexus Images available on Googles Development Site.

@Thomas @Seng I had the same problem and resolved it by flashing the bootloader from the official factory image LMY48T (bootloader-flounder-3.44.1.0123.img). Make sure that you reboot the bootloader before pushing the rest of the files. I used the vendor.img file included with Remix OS 2.0.

I flashed to the last build of 5.1.1 and then to Jide OS and it worked flawlessly.  Took a while as of course after flashing to 5.1.1 you have to get back into the OS to turn USB debugging back on, but it worked perfectly.

Only comment is there is no userdata.img as part of the Jide OS download to flash.  So that step didn't work but it doesn't seem to matter.

When booting the device reports 'an internal problem with your system' but it doesn't seem to impact operation at all.

Flashed and running on Nexus 9 but the only adjustable multi windows that will work are the pre-installed apps. Downloaded YouTube,  Chrome, etc. but they only open as full screen and can only be minimized or closed. Am I missing a settings function? I checked the experimental features but didn't see anything...

I think @Teuton Liu 's answer should be copied to the OP so that newcomers don't brick their devices before reading the solution in the comments like I did.

Now trying the ROM. It's looking good, but I find it a bit odd not being able to use windowed mode with every app. Is there a hidden setting or something to enable that? Even if experimental, I would like to try that.

Looks good overall, but would love to see a Marshmallow version of it (which I guess won't come anywhere soon).

How do I get google play store working on this? It comes without the store and I've tried installing apk from the internet and flashing gapps but when I open the store it goes to adding new google account window and it turns itself off. I also cant add google account from settings.

@Arek it comes with Play Store bundled. Try flashing again (or maybe clean flashing by installing stock LMY48T factory image first, then following Teuton Liu's steps?) and see if that works.

Thank you! Flashed remix again and all working now. I think I donwnloaded OS from a different website before for some reeason because the download file's name is slightly different.

google apps cant be minimized according to user.
is it a bug??? because in remix os 2.0 , in videos, YouTube as well as chrome can be resized but not for nexus 9

    I'm running RemixOS 1.5 on nexus 10.
Can I flash 2.0 without having to a complete wipe?

Same question as Scott Smith:  The only windowed apps on my nexus 9 that I can find are Microsoft Office apps and Skype.   Yet Remix OS main web page shows YouTube and Chrome clearly in window mode.  Is there a setting somewhere to enable window mode that we're missing??

  • Avatar
    Arek

@Mark Pinsk go to settings -> applications and there you need to open every app and turn off the "Open in fullscreen mode" option. Some apps won't let you do that, but in my case I could do that with most of them.

@Arek -  Ohhhh thanks!!  Hey Jide, maybe that should be posted somewhere because it's not obvious.

I followed the guide, but with these results:

    # fastboot flash system system.img
    erasing 'system'...
    OKAY [ 0.034s]
    sending 'system' (487639 KB)...
    OKAY [ 61.802s]
    writing 'system'...
    FAILED (remote: signature verification failed!)

    # fastboot flash cache cache.img
    erasing 'cache'...
    OKAY [ 0.041s]
    sending 'cache' (10372 KB)...
    OKAY [ 1.331s]
    writing 'cache'...
    FAILED (remote: signature verification failed!)

    # fastboot flash userdata userdata.img
    erasing 'userdata'...
    OKAY [ 0.244s]
    sending 'userdata' (137478 KB)...
    OKAY [ 17.364s]
    writing 'userdata'...
    FAILED (remote: signature verification failed!)

All it does now is boot to the bootlader.

    Any solutions?

The good solution is the one from @Teuton Liu but don't forget to finish with : fastboot -w  !!!!!! I forget this one and I was trapped in a bootloop ! If anyone is stuck in a bootloop because you don't follow the steps, you don't need to reflash an android stock firmware, retry with the solution of @Teuton Liu and finish with fastboot -w. It worked for me !

Thanks to the developpers for this awesome OS which is more mature than expected ! You can transform your tablet on a mini PC, great for productivity but only with a keyboard and a mouse.
