Removing Google applications from Remix Mini

As part of this update to Remix OS on Remix Mini, Google applications (www.android.com/gms) will be removed from the device.

If you choose to skip the update, you will continue with your current Remix OS experience, which includes Google applications. However, you will not be able to receive any future updates or bug fixes OTA.

The reason this update removes Google applications, is to ensure a consistent experience across all Android devices for all apps. We are committed to bringing you the ultimate Android experience, and will continue to dedicate our resources to do this.

so we will lose google play store, google mail, youtube?

why? Remix OS main selling point is access to all the apps for use in desktop interface, now you want to control which apps we can use?

You can do this for your china users but please maintain a global rom (with google services) for international users

ok update, i proceeded with the update, google play store removed, but you can go to the remix central and reinstall the google play services

Can't say I agree with the approach as access to all the andriod apps is the thing that gives this OS its appeal. I've done the update and can still use and download Google Play Store Apps. Mind you I have not yet rebooted since I clicked onto the Remix Central App store.

Then technically speaking what exactly does removing it improve? If I can still download and install them? Is it freeing up space?

So, I'm confused,  I can't even get to my email without Google services. I reinstalled Google play services after the update. So, this means I will not get any further updates after this? This makes Remix OS almost unusable.

How does removing Google applications "ensure a consistent experience across all Android devices for all apps"? Seems like it will do just the opposite! Especially since many users will keep Google and not be getting updates any more at all. I want my mini to have the same apps my phone and tablet does. Otherwise it is useless to me.

The most important thing that decided me to buy remix mini is the play store!
All important apps like mail, TV apps, facebook, twitter and many more. All are updated with play store! I pray I can install manually gms and use it again after the update! If you blocked the installation of Google Play services then remix mini will be like an empty fridge 😩 the fridge is like your remix mini and the empty is remix mini without play store

Well Remix has just gone from something awesome to a bag full of disappointment. If I wont be able to recive updates if I install google services back then I guess its back to Raspberry Pi.

Wait. Let me get this straight. Since you haven't been able to get Google Play services secured for Remix OS for PC, you've decided to "ensure a consistent experience" by removing Google apps from Remix devices that already had it?

I guess this can be worked around by side-loading it, just like you now have to do with Remix OS for PC.  Still, the thought that runs through my mind is, "How many Jide engineers does it take to screw in a light bulb?" "None! In order to ensure a consistent experience, they'll just take away everyone else's light bulbs."

I mean, seriously.  If people wanted a low-cost basic computing device with little app support, Windows RT would have been a lot more successful.

Your user base is probably not comprised of casual users. They would appreciate a clear explanation of what is going on. If there is a problem with getting GMS on Remix, then let's get that out in the open and outline the best possible paths for using our machines.

Right now, I have a pretty cool setup and of course I want future updates, but I would like some confirmation that side-loading GMS will still work and will be a viable path for the future. Without Play Store access, this becomes a pretty limited device, indeed. Out of the box, it would do almost nothing if there was no Store access.

Don't get me wrong. We all have a vested interest in the success of the platform and we all recognize this is a setback. We just want to know what thoughts for the future are.

My guess is they weren't able to get Google approval for RemixOS on PC hardware.  So, they're reacting by removing it from the minis. Truly, not a smart move.

The power of Android is rooted in the availability of Google Play, Google Play Services, and other Google APIs. Removing these basically creates a useless device that just happens to run Android.

So, our choice is to keep the current version of software and never upgrade, or sideload Google Play Services and HOPE they remain compatible with whatever else changes in RemixOS down the road.

There is a third option, which I'll likely take - toss the device out.  With this news, plus the news of Chromebooks soon getting full Google Play support, RemixOS will become obsolete.

I'm very disappointed in this news, and even more disappointed as a Kickstarter backer.  This decision simply lacks sense.

    From Android Police

    http://www.androidpolice.com/2016/05/06/jide-is-removing-google-apps-from-remix-mini-in-new-remix-os-update/

"JIDE has confirmed that Google is responsible for the removal of Google apps. Traditional tablet devices that ship with Remix OS can still have GMS, but there were issues with the Mini's implementation. Google asked the company to remove GMS until those issues were addressed."

Clint I believe they are expecting us to side load Google Apps. Something we should not have to do.

I noticed but that is not the point. This device is marketed as 'Powered by Remix OS, Remix Mini allows you to work and play with the entire Android app ecosystem' except now they are removing some of the most important apps people use.

The only reason this is happening is because of the Remix OS for PC and all the different monitor sizes out there. Don't get me wrong I have a Jide Tablet and bought two Minis. I think they are great however I and many others have a right to be annoyed by this. Plus the 2nd mini was bought for a relative now I have to explain what has happened and go and fix it for them. Is Jide going to pay for my time and transport to travel halfway across the UK to fix an issue they have created? I doubt it.

Paul James Taylor Relax, the mini will still work exactly the same as before. Its not like you have to reprogram the whole thing like a Windows 'puter.

His knew his car would need petrol, it's not the same thing. We all supported Jide and no doubt we like their products but you can't make a fully working device that allows you to work and play with the entire Android app ecosystem then take away a core part regardless of how easy it is to side load it just because your 3rd product sucks. Consumers should not have to do things like this.
